1. Game name and a brief concept statement.

“If we die, we’ll take you with us” — Marine Lives

Team members: Jasmine Chen, Zi Wang, Michelle Liu,Yan Liu

Game Concept: This is a game of ocean pollution, the player takes on the role of a sea creature who needs to avoid touching and "eating" plastics or any other toxic trash floating in the water and find the right food to eat in order to survive. But it will inevitably die at the end of the game because of the pollution.

The only thing you have to do in the game is to eat the right food but not garbage. The rule is simple but it'll be super hard to dodge from the avalanche of falling garbage. The game is trying to force players to put themselves in the shoes of marine life, to face desperation.

2. Make sense of how your game works.

Players see a screen-based 2D side view and can move left and right, up and down to eat food and avoid trash.

3. Team member names, followed by each member's contributions to the game. Help each other recall all their contributions! :)

4. Evidence with narration (photos, notes, write-ups) from your brainstorming session, prototyping sessions,  playtesting sessions, and what changed in each iteration of your game. Include what happened on game day. Don't just dump photos! Put things together in a logical order so readers can follow your process.

Brainstorming:

Prototyping:

Photos of the game event:

5. Identify 1 thing as a team that you can improve about the game.

1.If we have more time, we’ll let humans be included in this game to do sth good. For example, maybe the player will have one or two chances to ask humans for help to clear all the trash on the screen, showing that still some people are trying to save the environment.

2.The game background is currently too monotonous, it would be better if it is dynamic

Michelle Liu Suggestion:

  • There needs to be a purpose of winning and losing.
  • After playing the game I noticed that there is a bug in the game, in which the player only needs to balance the number between garbage and food to survive. Players can continue to consume garbage and food in the game to clean the seafloor and since food drop rate is 1s per one food and the garbage generates 1 per 3 seconds this play is duable, therefore another value needs to be created to limit player’s action.
  • The above problem can be solved by adding a hunger bar. Eating garbage will affect the health (Presents as red heart) and when health gets to 0 the player fails. Meanwhile, the player needs to balance the hunger bar (Presents as blue Fish) by consuming food such as shrimps, sea weeds and planktons. When the hunger bar gets to zero the player fails the game.
  • Extra game instruction page is needed to present at the front.
  • The fallen speed for the garbage and food can differ and extend the floating time.

Zi Wang Suggestion:

  1. Make two bars - one for toxic level and one for hungry level
  2. Toxic value will increase if player hit by garbage and will no longer be recovered by eating food
  3. Either toxic bar or hungry bar became 0, player will die
  4. Make food and garbage, or character, a bit smaller so that the game will be easier, otherwise, garbage will pile up high at the bottom too quickly and block your way
  5. It’s hard to tell if that thing is edible or not because of the small graphics and falling speed. I think we can put all characters, food and types of trash on the very beginning on the guide page so that player who first plays this game can have a  clearer understanding of what is ok to eat and what they have to dodge

Yan Liu suggestion:

  1. The background color is too monotonous, you can add some marine plants to make the marine ecological environment.
  2. The life value of the game is now only 5 lives. It is recommended to increase the number of lives to make the player experience longer.
  3. Rubbish accumulates in the ocean, which reduces the space for the little fish to move and reduces the space for movement. Reducing the size of the garbage pattern will increase the space for the little fish to play and enhance the sense of experience.
  4. The transparency of the color of the shrimp pattern is too high, and the contrast of the shrimp can be increased to make the picture clearer.
  5. Need introduction page (Start the game)
  6. Need game instruction page (what is the rule of the game/ food/ garbage/ what can eat what cannot)

Jasmine’s Conclusion:

  1. Adding hunger bar (heart=garbage / hunger = food)
  2. Differ the fallen speed of garbage and food (garbage fall faster than the food)
  3. Need introduction page (Start the game)
  4. Need game instruction page (what is the rule of the game/ food/ garbage/ what can eat what cannot)
  5.  Reducing the size of the garbage pattern
